Qt Quick Designer

The Qt Quick Designer visual editor is provided as an experimental plugin that you must enable to be able to edit QML files in the Design mode.

Enabling the visual editor can negatively affect the overall stability of Qt Creator.





To enable or disable the Qt Quick Designer visual editor, select Help > About Plugins... > Qt Quick > QmlDesigner. You must restart Qt Creator to enable or disable the visual editor.

What's QML and Qt Quick?

QML is an extension to JavaScript, that provides a mechanism to declaratively build an object tree of QML elements. QML improves the integration between JavaScript and Qt's existing QObject based type system, adds support for automatic property bindings and provides network transparency at the language level.

The QML elements are a sophisticated set of graphical and behavioral building blocks. These different elements are combined together in QML documents to build components ranging in complexity from simple buttons and sliders, to complete internet-enabled applications like a Flickr photo browser.

Qt Quick provides a declarative framework for building highly dynamic, custom user interfaces from a rich set of QML elements. Qt Quick helps programmers and designers collaborate to build the fluid user interfaces that are becoming common in portable consumer devices, such as mobile phones, media players, set-top boxes and netbooks.

Update puts Qt onto your Nokia N900

Update puts Qt onto your Nokia N900

Nokia N900 holders rejoice – your device, which was already very nifty and useful, now has an important system update that, among other improvements, includes the Qt libraries. When you install it you are installing Qt onto your device.

The PR 1.2 firmware update for the Nokia N900 was released this week; you can find out more about it at maemo.org .

What does this mean? It means that Qt apps can be installed and run on your device, which is a great thing. All Nokia N900s that ship with this new firmware will have Qt inside them by default.

Consider this: when the new Nokia N8 lands in a few months, Nokia’s top two devices – the flagship Symbian device and the flagship Maemo/MeeGo device – will both have Qt inside them by default.

So get out there and download that update N900 owners. I’ve done it (FYI those not on fixed-price data plans might want to use wifi for this) and my N900 has never been happier or Qt-er.

Some useful information:

• A good starting point for developing with Qt for Maemo 5 is the Nokia Qt SDK.

PR 1.2 firmware for the N900 released with Qt 4.6.2

The PR 1.2 firmware for the N900 is finally released with Qt 4.6.2 shipping by default (see maemo.org for all PR 1.2 related info). This means that all the apps that up until now only ran in the SDK can finally be deployed to real devices.

Betas of Qt 4.7 and Qt Creator 2.0 Now Available

Nokia released beta versions of Qt 4.7 and Qt Creator 2.0. Both are now available for download, testing and feedback from the official Qt website qt.nokia.com.

A major feature in the Qt 4.7 beta release is a beta version of Qt Quick, the new high-level UI technology that enables developers and designers to work together to create animated, touch enabled UIs.

In addition, the Qt 4.7 beta includes an update of the Qt WebKit Integration and further progress on planned performance and quality process improvements for Qt.

Qt 4.7 and Qt Creator 2.0 Technology Previews Released

Nokia released technology previews of Qt 4.7 and Qt Creator 2.0. Also in this release is the first introduction of Qt Quick: a new high-level UI technology that enables developers and designers to work together to create animated, touch-enabled UIs and lightweight applications. Qt 4.7 and Qt Creator 2.0 are scheduled for release in mid-2010 as part of the Qt SDK, with interim beta releases planned.
